Is that the sun?

June 17th, 2007

It has been cloudy and rainy and humid and sticky for several days now. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good thunderstorm - but I prefer the kind from childhood, bubbling and boiling up out of the gulf on summer afternoons. This kind spits angrily and grumbles and groans and has fantastic cloud-to-cloud lightning. And by 6 p.m., it’s rolled off, dissipating into the atmosphere, leaving the world cool, refreshed. None of this “just damp enough to create steam”, nor this “a year’s worth of rain in two hours.”

The backyard is a veritable swamp - if you step on the sod you sink down about two feet. There is a muddy disgusting trail where the dogs always seem to walk, and probably won’t see grass growth until next spring.

But right now, inside, it’s quiet and cool, just me and the dogs. Beau is here by my side, sleeping in the light that filters through the small window in my room. He’s curled up with his Bunny (yes, the one with only one eye) and in the other room Sabine is happily chomping away at a Nylabone I gave her.

It’s almost 11 and I’ve only eaten an avocado today. Maybe I should go shower. Just 4 more days until I hop a plane to Alaska until July.

I exist!

According to the USPS, I now exist in my new house. I can be found on Google maps too. Of course, it just shows a picture of an empty lot.

It’s nice to know that if all else fails, people can send me mail.

Settling in nicely

June 6th, 2007

Really, it is hard for me to believe that it is already Wednesday. This time last week I was staring at my disheveled apartment wondering how the heck I was going to manage to get all that stuff over to the new house in some kind of manner that would not result in death or fire. I was working hard to get my project done at work and working hard to make a professionally stocked kitchen (practically anyway) fit into just a few empty boxes. Thanks goodness for friends and family and a personal drive that keeps me awake and going when there is something major to accomplish.

I started moving on Friday around 3:30 p.m. and completed the move yesterday morning around 8:30 a.m. Admittedly, I was not moving constantly this whole time, although it sure felt like it. I think that moving can be a lot of fun, what with the change to reorganize, prioritize and chuck all that crap you’ve been storing away for a rainy day. I worked until about 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning and then the family came into town a few hours later to help me paint, move furniture, install ceiling fans and the garage door opener. Beau spent a rough first night out in the backyard, but we have since worked out the kinks in the system. I finally got a desk chair, a wireless router and my fish tank (not set up yet though) over here at the house. I just need to go back to the apartment to fetch my microplane grater and that’s it. Fin. No more. Hopefully not until I have that shiny DVM after my name.

I’m planning on getting some pictures up for you soon of my wonderous new digs, but until then be satisfied in knowing I will not post any cooking pictures in the meantime because this whole gas stove thing has thrown me for a loop. Holy cow Batman that thing gets hot!!
